Test drove a WRX today and really liked it. Any reason I should definitely consider one more/avoid it? Also is the hatchback worth it over the sedan? Anything I should watch out for? Is the STI worth the extra money? Do I need this in Rally Blue with gold wheels? Do I need to still consider the BRZ/FRS/86? So many questions.

Gotcha. Hatch commands a premium because there isn’t one anymore. That may change if the next generation has a hatch. EJ motor means they are reasonably well sorted. Stay away from mods and it will be OK but typical turbo Subaru problems will set in eventually. Personally I’d go with the hatch that generation. The sedan doesn’t have the huge trunk of the ‘15+ and personally I think the hatch looks better. I would check with your insurance company before looking at an STi.... I’ve heard they are pretty expensive to insure. Just anecdotal but that could add even more to the price.

Sti is head and shoulders above the wrx in terms of capability on and off road. Quite a bit more fun as well. But a low mileage used one in good shape commands basically the same price as new, at least around Seattle.

If you’re planning on building it up slightly, grab the wrx in limited trim.

Having driven both, I would not agree that the boostang is better than the 86. Two very different machines. Boostang feels bloated and huge in comparison to the 86. Some people don’t want that sort of experience.

The boostang weighs nearly a thousand pounds more than an 86 and some people prefer light and agile cars over something as big as the boostang.

Fantastic daily driver, fantastic autocross weapon, terrible track day toy.

When you peg the single-scroll turbo at full tilt on a racetrack, it overboosts and engages the fuel cutoff for 5-10 seconds. It takes 2-3 hard laps for it to overboosting, but it will happen on every straightaway until you exit the track. Subaru is aware of the problem, but knows that’s it only occurs on a racetrack, so they refuse to help. It can apparently be fixed easily with a quick tune, but that voids the warranty. I suspect this is the #1 reason why Subaru refuses to build a turbo BRZ, since they know it will be a disaster of C7 Z06 proportions.

All that said, if I wasn’t tracking it, I would still own it. Best DD I’ve ever owned and zero issues at autocross. And when it wasn’t overboosting, it punched well above its weight class against the Porsche’s I do HPDE with.

I’m worried that won’t get you a lot of used WRX. I don’t know what prices are like down in 10-U-SEE, but up here, used WRXs and STIs are along the lines of Tacomas, as in. “May as well just buy a new one because damn these suckers are expensive used.”

Honestly you’d be better off asking someone else. I’ve got a ton of seat time, from trackdays to rallys, but the only Subaru I’ve owned is an 08 Outback. For what it’s worth my friends with wrx’s and Sti’s don’t seem to have many issues driving hard with mods, but they’re all much better than the average gearhead in terms of mechanical ability.

As a *former* Subaru salesman one told me, “leaking oil is a feature with a Subaru, not a problem”. So maybe keep a quart in the back....

You’ve got a lot of questions answered already so I’ll just chime in for things I haven’t seen yet. The STI is only worth the extra money if you plan on tracking it, or being competitive with it. The EJ comes on all STIs until possibly 2021, is more receptive to mods than the FA (more parts, higher knowledge base) but it also comes with a stronger 6 speed, mechanical diffs, the DCCD, bigger wheels, brakes, that sort of thing, but that stuff, stock, wouldn’t really help you on the street. Also, if you don’t mod it, the EJ system is behind technologically despite Subaru’s constant fiddling and gets terrible mpg.
They don’t make hatches for this generation of WRX/STI, so you’d be getting a previous gen, which honestly has a poorer interior. I like the interior in the new ones by comparison (Had a stock ‘11 STI.)

I think a WRX is a better daily than the BR-Z, but my coworker loves his BR-Z, so you should frame that in the context of personal utility.

I had two Subarus and loved them, but I wound up going a different route after I gave those up, so if you can tolerate the ride for the same price you can get a high mileage 08 IS-F, but keep in mind there is little tuning market for those.

The third result for “Toyota engine issues” is excessive oil consumption. Search engine results alone do not count as proof of anything, other than that most internet capable car owners are morons. Hell, you could probably remove the internet part and it’ll still be true.

Up to and including 2014 they had the EJ255 vs the EJ257 in the STI. 2015 they went to the FA20DIT, which has direct injection but not port injection. With only direct injection there tends to be carbon coking on the back of the valves (most DI engines suffer from some level of this) so you may want to think about about a AOS or catch can to arrest the buildup. But otherwise the engine peak torque comes up early and for real world stop and start power it’s strong.

Adult size back seats, good amenities, and (I’ve been told) that the stock block is welcoming of up to about 350 crank hp, depending on E85 and other factors/parts and the cleverness of your tuner.

I have another friend with a BR-Z with headers exhaust and e85 tune and he’s basically making stock WRX-ish power at the wheels and he’s very happy with the handling, but he has a separate car for family runs. But that setup definitely cost him as much as a regular WRX would run anyway. Given, you do sit lower and there’s more driver involvement, but the BR-Z’s acceleration is anemic in stock form and it’s not very practical, just better at kicking the rears out in the turns.

Luckily I’ll be able to keep the LS400 and the wife has the RX350 so carrying capacity is not my biggest worry. I feel like the BRZ is eigt but the WRX is so very tempting. Ugh.

Yeah, I drove AWD for half a decade and I went RWD instead, so I can push the rear out if I wanted to. To further muddy the waters for you, the WRX seems to also come with the brake vectoring feature like the Focus ST does. It brakes the inner wheel during turns to pull the chassis in line. It’s disable-able, but I think you wind up turning off the traction or stability control at the same time. (I hate all the clever names each company uses for these features. I always disabled all of them when I drove my STI.)

Previous gen WRXes and current gen MANUAL WRxes do a 50/50 torque split with a viscous coupling center diff. For some reason, the CVT version of the 2015 has a 45/55 Front/Rear split, I’m not sure why. Obviously the BR-Z would be 0/100.

Keep in mind that from the factory both BR-Z and WRX are tuned to push a little at the limit - that’s so any inept drivers don’t wind up facing a oversteer situation they can’t handle. New sway bars/tires/springs/the usual suspension stuff will change both of their demeanors. If you get a BR-Z and it comes with the stock tires, get rid of them. They’re Prius tires - low resistance - and meant to help drift at 30mph.

The amenities between both Subarus are pretty equal, but the WRX wins out very slightly for interior comfort butt-feels and the BR-Z does slightly better in mpg.

I think the bottom line is, if you buy a BR-Z, you’re going to be fine, but you’re going to want to mod it immediately. The WRX you can drive daily and have fun with it without modding it, but the option is there, and both (especially if the BR-Z Limited package comes into play, which adds all the interior goodies) seem to be at pretty much the same price, which is the big kicker for me. Neither are track ready in OEM form.

I’d say test drive both and see which one your hands and butt likes more.

I’m so split I think I’m going to have to go to Subaru and test them back to back and then let the wife decide based on what she can deal with me having the most. At this point I’m good with either. Like you said, the BRZ will get modded quick and probably cost the same as an equivalent WRX so I Golf to giver her the option so I can jokingly blame it all on her later haha

I’ve got an ‘07 STi from new that has been awesome for me. The only issues that I’ve had:
- regret buying dark grey instead of WR blue
- replace secondary air valve
- replace sparkplugs and one coil
- ... that’s it

If you buy one it must be WR blue, preferably with gold wheels. It’s kind of like a red Ferrari, yeah its cliche, but if your first Ferrari isn’t red you’ll regret it until you own a red Ferrari.

As far as all the noise about head gaskets, ring lands, etc., those tend to become issues with people who tune the engines to within an inch of their lives and/or don’t bother doing the routine maintenance that any vehicle needs. If it’s going to live life as a DD with maybe an exhaust or something simple for mods you should be fine. If you get a tuner and crank the boost as high as it’ll go without beefing things up you’re going to have a bad time.

Oh yeah, the passenger airbag is the Claymore Edition by Takata that needs to be replaced.

I’ve got a ten year old STi that would beg to differ. My list of issues is:
- replace secondary air valve
- replace spark plugs and one coil
- ... that’s all

Do the routine maintenance, don’t do stupid mods and don’t thrash it to within an inch of it’s life and it’ll be fine. If you do stupid mods, beat the crap out of it and don’t bother doing routine maintenance you’re going to have problems, just like with any other car.

I’m late to this but go 86. The current WRX is impresively ugly and large and heavy. Or go used WRX and get the blobeye.
